“Children learn through play” is a phrase we hear often and one that the ECE sector almost universally believes in. As a result we see services with spaces, resources, equipment and toys available for children to use in their play. But where does this leave the teacher?

Literature tells us that thoughtful and deliberate involvement and intervention in children’s play can positively impact learner outcomes. In fact the teacher is the most important resource for the child’s learning. In order to make a real difference in children’s learning teachers need to be intentional in the actions that they take and the decisions that they make.

The thoughtful, intentional teacher can:

  • Recognise when to intervene in play
  • Use the most effective strategies to promote learning in play
  • Draw on assessment information and tailor responses to progress learning in the moment

About the presenters

Bridgit Williams

MProfStud(Ed); BA (Ed); DipTchgECE; PGDip Montessori

Bridgit has been a professional learning facilitator and mentor since 2008, previously with EC Professional Support at the University of Auckland. She believes effective leadership and ongoing professional learning are key to improving quality in early childhood education.

Bridgit completed her Masters degree in early 2015, looking specifically at the induction and mentoring of ECE teachers. Her professional interests include effective leadership and communication, inclusive teaching practice, intentional teaching and implementing authentic curriculum.
